Title: Blacksburg Police Officer
Job Summary:
A Blacksburg Police Officer provides protection of life and property within the municipal boundaries of the Town of Blacksburg, SC. This is a full time job.
Required Qualifications:
– Currently certified as a SC Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.
– Must be twenty-one (21) years old or older at time of employment.
– High school diploma or equivalent.
– Must pass a criminal background record check.
– Must have a valid South Carolina driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any other state.
– U.S. citizen.
– Must be able to read, speak, and write the English language fluently.
– Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
Other:
Conditional offer of employment based upon satisfactory results from pre-employee physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
Responsibilities:
– Responding to calls for service and emergency assistance.
– Rendering aid to the physically injured.
– Investigates conditions hazardous to life or property; conducts initial investigations od crime and crime scenes, may assist in criminal investigation work, conduct search and seizure activities as appropriate. Collects and preserves crime scene and evidence.
– Enforcing state and town ordinances relating to keeping the peace.
– Providing motorized and foot patrol to residential and business areas.
– Practicing problem solving techniques in support of the department’s community policing and problem solving strategies.
– Operating police vehicles in routine and emergency situations. Patrolling city streets areas, and businesses to deter criminal activity and promote public safety.
– Presents evidence and testimony in judicial settings.
– Participating in job-related training and courses to maintain skills, knowledge and abilities.
– Act without direct supervision and exercising independent direction in meeting emergencies.
– Pursuing and apprehending fleeing suspects (climbing fences or walls, jumping ditches, running several blocks, etc.).
– Using firearms and other means of self-defense.
– Write state summons and attend court when required.
– Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police, Lieutenant, or the Sergeant.
Salary Information:
Entry level salary $15.83/hourly.

Help Wanted: School Crossing Guard
Title: Blacksburg Middle School Crossing Guard.
Location: Intersection of Hardin Street and Ramsuer Street.
Qualifications:
– Must be eighteen (18) years or older.
– Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.
Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Blacksburg Middle School Crossing Guard is the safety of school children crossing the streets and intersections to and from school. In order to do this successfully, he/she must stop and direct all traffic at the school crossing and direct students when its safe to cross. The School Crossing Guard must report to his/her assigned post on time each morning and afternoon that school sessions begin/end and remain on duty until all students cross safely. This is a seasonal position held only when students are in session for the main school year.
Essential Functions:
1. Maintains the safety of all students and pedestrians by controlling the flow of traffic for the crossing of students and pedestrians at his/her assigned crosswalk.
2. Maintain the appearance and serviceability of all issued equipment.
3. Occasionally attend in-service training as required.
4. Must be willing to work in all types of weather.
Other skills and abilities:
– Must be able to recognize potential hazards to individuals utilizing the crosswalks.
– Must be able to effectively communicate with children and pedestrians.
– Ability to deal effectively and courteously with people of all ages.
– Must have adequate sight and hearing to protect children from potential traffic hazards.
– Ability to walk and perform crossing duties in all weather and traffic conditions.
Work Environment:
– Work outside exposed to weather in climatic conditions associated with outside work.
– Work in moderately noisy conditions.
– Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
– Works in close proximity to gas fumes from passing vehicles.
– Works on slippery, uneven surfaces.
– Works in and around moving objects and vehicles.
Terms of Employment:
– On duty from 7:00 am – 8:00 am and 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm at specified crosswalk location.
– Paid for two (2) hours per day at the rate of $10.00/hour.
Position Type: Part time.
